The new windshield is in, and I’m pretty happy with it so far. My glass guy switched from PGW to FY, which I won’t argue with. I’ve heard pretty good things about FY, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

If this windshield lasts until this time next year without a crack through the heated windshield wiper pads, I’ll take back what I said about it being a useless feature.

So what is PGW and FY and what’s the difference?

It’s actually amazing how big of a difference a new windshield can make on a car. A hammer in my garage accidentally ;) fell on my old windshield and the replacement showed how beat up they can get over a few years of use.

Both PGW (Pittsburgh Glass Works, formerly part of Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG)) and FY (Fuyao Glass) are automotive glass manufacturers. Guardian and Pilkington are also large automotive glass manufacturers.

The difference comes down to the formulation each company uses for their glass. The ideal automotive glass should be hard enough to resist impacts from stone chips, but soft enough to not fracture from temperature differences (warm area of windshield in cold ambient air).

The OEM glass was very susceptible to stone chips, but I never had an issue with the heated wiper pads. The PGW glass did not get any stone chips in the year I had it (~6,000 miles on the Turnpike in the winter), however, I had a large crack form though my heated wiper pads this past winter. I’m hoping this new windshield from FY sits somewhere between the two in terms of properties, but time will tell. Of course, these are just my observations. I haven’t actually done any testing to verify this.

Another difference could be quality control. It is possible that I may have received a flawed windshield from PGW. That’s not to say that quality control is better at FY, however, I have heard a fair amount of complaints about PGW windshields as of late.

A new windshield definitely can make a huge difference. However, the one I just replaced was a little over a year old.
